Integrative Oncology
Integrative oncology brings together conventional cancer treatment with evidence-informed complementary approaches to support people throughout and beyond cancer treatment.
My approach combines traditional Chinese medicine diagnosis with an understanding of contemporary oncology. Acupuncture can be used as part of supportive cancer care to help manage a range of cancer- and treatment-related symptoms, including pain, nausea and vomiting, cancer-related fatigue, hot flushes, chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN), sleep disturbance, anxiety and dry mouth, depending on the individual and their clinical circumstances.
The use of acupuncture within cancer care is increasingly supported by clinical research and international integrative oncology guidelines, although the strength of evidence varies between symptoms. My practice is informed by current research and recommendations, while treatment remains individually tailored according to Chinese medicine principles. Rather than relying on fixed protocols for particular symptoms or cancer diagnoses, I consider each person's overall presentation, using traditional diagnostic methods to guide treatment.
Chinese herbal medicine may also be considered in selected cases, with the aim of supporting general health and helping manage symptoms associated with cancer and its treatment. Herbal prescriptions are individually formulated according to Chinese medicine diagnosis and adjusted as the person's condition and treatment needs change.
Because cancer treatment can involve chemotherapy, radiotherapy, endocrine therapy, immunotherapy and targeted therapies, herbal prescribing requires particular care. I consider current medications, blood results, treatment-related toxicities and potential herb–drug interactions, and where appropriate work in communication with the patient's oncology team. Herbal medicine is not suitable for everyone, and safety always takes priority.
Integrative oncology is not an alternative to conventional cancer treatment. Its role is to support the individual alongside their medical care — helping to manage symptoms, maintain quality of life and provide safe, personalised support through the different stages of treatment and recovery.
Integrative oncology is an important part of my clinical and teaching work.
I practise at Synthesis Clinic, a specialist integrative oncology clinic in Berkshire, where I work as part of a multidisciplinary team supporting people affected by cancer through acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine.
Working alongside oncology professionals and other healthcare specialists allows me to integrate traditional Chinese medicine into a collaborative clinical setting, with particular attention to individualised treatment, patient safety and the challenges associated with cancer and its treatment.
Alongside my clinical work, I contribute to professional oncology education through the National Centre for Integrative Oncology (NCIO), teaching practitioners and helping them develop the knowledge, clinical reasoning and practical skills needed to work safely and effectively with people affected by cancer.
My aim, both in practice and education, is to help bridge traditional Chinese medicine and contemporary oncology, encouraging thoughtful collaboration and an evidence-informed approach to supportive cancer care.
